Sleepy Hollow Rod Run - Sechelt. B.C.

We had a beautiful day to set off on our cruise to Sechelt Friday early afternoon. The only draw back to the gorgeous trip was the lineup to get on the ferry. We had an hour and a half or more wait to board the ferry. In the lineup, two cars behind us, we met a beautiful couple from Abbotsford, Bruce and Jennie who made our wait very enjoyable. Of course with rods we discovered very quickly we were going to the same run, Sechelt. At one point Brian went way ahead because the line was moving up and they gave me a ride to catch up with him. The next move up it was Brian's turn to go and talk with them.

Finally we boarded the ferry for our scenic ferry ride to Sechelt. We very quickly met up with Bruce and Jennie again and introduced them to other BCHRA members on the same ferry trip. We had a very talkative ride there on old cars and cars from our pasts. Bruce and Jennie have a 1938 Plymouth Coupe. All steel car, blown 350 Chevrolet, turbo 400, all corvette suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, Budniks wheels, leather and tweed interior, air, tilt, and 300 watt stereo. The car is the color of a spectacular blue grey (I don't know the technical color, yet). It sounds like I am a car enthusiast or a professional rodder (doesn't it). Are you impressed yet?? The trip there was very memorable.

We arrived there with time enough to check into our motel and head off to register at the Trail Bay Shopping Mall. Hundreds of cars greeted us at the mall. What a sight to see!! At 7:00 we headed up island on a police escorted cruise. Hundreds of people lined the route. Winding up and down, people all over. It was like a family picnic brought out to the streets to wait for all the rods to pass by. Families lined the routes with barrels of ice and beer, wine, and pop. People cheering for us and waving as we came by. This was our second year there and this is what I came for, Friday night, the best of the whole weekend!! We received such a warm welcome there; it was just so warm, welcoming and friendly. I have never seen such a nice town as this before. People were talking to you as we went by and saying come back and have some wine with us, we were always welcome. What a nice little town. After the cruise we headed to Mason Bluff Farm for corn on the cob and coffee. When we got back to the motel we relaxed on the patio of the motel and had a bit of wine and then headed off to bed, for an early rising.

At 6:15 Saturday morning, the early bird, guys at the Royal Reach were out getting the dew off their rods. Bob Allen, Bob Brown, Bob Ewen, Henry Tjart, Harold Swift, Bill Alder, and Ed Swanson. Sorry, if I have missed someone. Off they went to the Show and Shine at 7 AM. While the rest of the men needed some more beauty sleep. I think Bob Humphrey was the very last to get up that morning but of course he was the handsomest man there. It pays to sleep in doesn't it Bob. Then of course there's the woman who always must be late to get all that war paint on. It has to be just right, you know!!

Finally off to the Show and Shine, and what a gorgeous day for it. There were prizes all day. The women had a Poker Walk, that kept us busy. The fire dept did a demonstration, they had an engine blow up, and we could get all our frustrations out on a car with a sledge hammer. The trophy presentations were at 3:00. With my Hubby - Brian Driedger winning 'FIRST' place for 'Modified Truck'. What a beautiful trophy it was. He deserved it, for all the time, hard work and money he has put into that 'awesome' truck. Over 5 years to complete. Well Done, Dear !! (Are you ever lucky I didn't bring my truck there, then there would have been some stiff competition, just kiddin', dear !!). Bob Genovese won 'SECOND' in 'Modified Car', then there was Bryon Dearborn who won a $1000.00 jacket, what luck that man has. Our BCHRA Club came home with numerous awards and trophies. Well Done, Club !!

In the evening we returned to Mason Bluff Turf Farm for a scrumptious dinner of salmon and chicken, with baked potatoes, veggies, and salad. Dessert was chocolate or white cake. It looked like a sea of cars on the field. We sat around and discussed the day, told jokes, and had a good time with good friends there. What a GREAT bunch of people we had on this cruise. Not a finer bunch to be found anywhere on this earth. The woman had their names drawn for various prizes, and what do women like better than getting something all wrapped up. Women love little presents !! Right women !! Music and dancing followed that. A bunch of us went back to the motel patio to sit and relax.

The next morning we all were off to get the ferry home. And just memories left of our great cruise to the 'Sleepy Hollow Rod Run'. We made a lot of new friends that will never be forgotten. Next year we will be there again. Can't wait. The best cruise to be on, the whole summer!! Thanks Sleepy Hollow and Coaster Car Club for a fabulous time!! We thank you for all of your hard work!! WELL DONE!!
